As we continue on our journey through the integration and use of technology in our class, lets pause for some evaluation and reflection. I have asked you to participate in weekly blogging, tweeting and collaborating. I have encouraged your presentations to take on a more contemporary style in terms of technology use and have “warned” you that the remainder of the semester will follow the same path. I want you to leave this class with a greater knowledge and skill in regards to technology and its power as an educational tool. Please comment on my blog about the following:
1. How do you receive information in this class? Is the focus on the teacher or is the student heavily involved in the attainment of knowledge?
2. Would you describe the class as an independent or collaborative setting in terms of the learning environment?
3. Have you learnt how to use different technology tools for the purpose of learning and collaborating?
4. Is technology use a regular routine in the class?
5. Do you feel technology influences the learning environment? How?
6. Please list the technology tools that you use and are available for educational purposes?
7. Any other comments in regards to technology in education (this particular class) would be appreciated!

Journal #2 – Due Monday February 6th
This week I am providing you with a task…or two
- We have briefly talked about Twitter and its influence on the 21st Century. Not only is Twitter a Social Networking tool used to catch up on gossip and see what the celebrities are up to – it can be used as a means of developing Personal Learning Networks to enhance your educational opportunities!
- If you have a twitter account already you can SKIP THIS STEP. If you have not signed up for Twitter watch the video Sign Up for Twitter and then sign up for an account here.
- Experiment with Twitter. Twitter Tutorial
- Search topics using hashtags
- Hashtags I use for this class are: #exercisescience, #exercisenutrition, #sportscience, #exercise, #nutrition
- Try searching some of these and see what you come up with
- Tweet a test tweet to #exscileibel
- Next week I will “tweet” a prompt and as a class we will collaborate via Twitter – the possibilities are exciting!
- For those of you who are adventurous – try using TweetDeck. Tweetdeck is a program that helps you “manage” your tweets based on interests/groups. Tweetdeck uses “columns” to organize your tweets. The best way for you to learn is to experiment.
- Have fun with this but always remember to Be Good Digital Citizens!!
Journal #1 – Due Monday January 30
Unlocking the Possibilities…
We are about to begin our journey through exercise Science. A major part of this course is collaborative learning, sharing and analyzing. This course is very different from the traditional course that many of us are used to. With any change in the way we are normally used to doing things, comes anxiety and fear. All I ask is that you are patient, optimistic and excited about the possibilities that exist as a result of incorporating technology/social media in the learning process.
Task #1
Write an introduction post that includes the following:
- Creative Commons Picture that represents the “theme” of the post
- introduce self
- what are your passions
- why did you take the course
- what do you expect from the course
- what are your future aspirations – how do they apply to this course
- what is your experience with technology and social media
- feelings regarding the technology push in education
Remember – this is your first educational post for this class. Your writing becomes public so make sure you are aware of your style and the manner in which you are representing yourself.

I believe that I’m gaining a great amount of knowledge from this class so far. Not only from what I’ve been able to personally learn, but also what Mrs. Leibel has taught me. It’s like Mrs. Leibel is giving us the tools and ideas to find many of these things out for ourselves in class and I think that’s a great idea. As far as my learning environment, it’s very open and varied. I like how we have the opportunities to work in other classrooms and settings. Being in groups is also very cool. I love this push in technology in our classrooms. It’s a new and very intellegent way to keep kids in class, and keep them interested. We use twitter and blogging everyday in class and I’ve learned bettter how to use twitter for more ways than personal use. It’s really fun to use it in class. I’ve also learned about blogging thru this class. I’ll admit it took me a bit of time to understand how to use it but once I got the hang of it, it made alot of sense to use it in an educational way. This is my favourite class this year over all and I know it will keep getting better! Fitness is a huge part of my life, and learning how my body does the things it does in the gym, makes me very intrigued in this class
In this class we operate mainly at the evaluating and creating levels. We critique each others blog post, comment on each others projects and posts. We also collaborate on Twitter to make the class easier and more fun. In the creating level, we are asked to organize our own blog which we must keep up to date. We use new technology to present our projects and learn together.
Remembering-memorizing muscle groups and bones
Understanding-learning what these bones do for us, movement and structure.
Applying-sticky notes where the muscles and bones are
Evaluate- Sliding Filament and Neuromuscular Junction, and test kids in elementary schools for their cognative abilities.
Create- the magazine on a particular sport as a project.
According to the Bloom’s digital taxonomy scale, in our class we operate a lot in the understanding level, as well as the evaluating level. We often use blogging, twittering, tagging, commenting, blog commenting, collaborating, and posting.
- Victor C
In this class we operate at different levels of thinking according to “Bloom’s Digital taxonomy”. The first level we operate at is creating. We blog and tweet projects for students and teachers to see and we also make presentations so that also applies. We also “evaluate” by commenting on other students blogs, posting out own blog entries and working together with other students.
Remembering: This is the level that most classes in high school operate at. We have done some work at this level when we worked on memorising the bones and muscles and doing a test. As a class group, I don’t think we really took that information and applied it elsewhere, we just memorised it to get a good mark on the tests.
Understanding: We used this level somewhat when we did presentations about the neuromuscular junction and the sliding filament theory. In order to do a good presentation, you can’t merely write down a bunch of facts and read them to the class, you have to take time to understand what it is you’re really talking about. We are also in this level when we comment on each other’s blogs. When you comment on a blog, you should have read the person’s post and understnad what they were talking about.
Applying: I don’t know about this class as a whole, but I know I’ve benefitted from learning the muscles and bones and applied the knowledge elsewhere. When I go to fitness classes, I actually know what the instructors are referring to and I get more out of it.
Analysing and Evaluating: We are in these levels when we create our blogs and write our blog posts. We are given an article, which we are to analyse, then evaluate it through our blog post. We come up with our own views on the topic and also relate it to personal experience.
Creating: We haven’t done much in this level, yet. The closest we’ve gotten is the week that we wrote the blog entry where we had to find the article.
Remembering- we listen and describe some muscles highlighting where some muscles. we dont operate to much here
Evaluating- we do this alot as we blog, we critique other peoples blog and really make others think of what they write
analysing- weve analyzed a number of articles and we really compare and get the details out of them
I feel like this class covers all of the skills from the Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy. We do lots of activities and as a class we are very good with participation. Blogging is a big part of our class, it helps us find and share information with the rest of the class and it really helps our learning. In this class we do several activities to help our memorization which is really helpful for tests, projects, etc. Mrs. leibel makes sure we understand everything we need for the units!
Of all the key terms on Blooms Digital Taxonomy, I would say the main terms we use would be Applying and Evaluating. From the Applying aspect, we spend alot of time actually physically doing things. While we were learning about muscles we physically used sticky notes to stick the name of the muscle onto the body. We also did research on one specific muscle and taught the class about it and how to remeber that muscle giving each person a hands on perspective. As for the Evaluating part, I believe we spend alot of time in this section. Blogging is one of the main things done in this class and along with blogging comes blog commenting. Close to every week we must post our own blog as well as read and comment on two other classmates blogs. This allows us to get out imput out and collaborate with the other students in the class. Alot of our tests are also done online. We do small quizzes called Bellringers that are important to testing our knowledge and we also do tests online. I find this easier to do and I enjoy it more than actually having to write my test on paper. Although I believe we focus heavily on these terms in the taxonomy, we do use other parts of the terms as well. We do use Remembering while we use our textbooks to review muscles and bones and to research information on google about muscles, body systems; the sliding filament theory. As for the understanding aspect, we use twitter to tweet under a common hashtag to share things about exercise science with the class. For analysing we will watch Youtube clips online to learn about muscles and different types of body parts. And last but not least we do use Creating to post blogs every week and read different articles to write about. We are the creaters and we write what we feel we need to write.
Here are activities that represent each of these skills:
Remembering: Reading about the bones and muscles from the textbook, and memorizing where they are on the body.
Understanding: Blog journalling about certain topics and commenting on other students’ blogs. Picking one body part and becoming the “expert” on it, and presnting out findings to the class.
Applying: Testing our knowledge on bellringer quizzes or worksheets. Participating in the post-it activity, where we stuck post-its in the correct muscles of the body. We also use the worksheets in our workbook to apply knowledge and enable ourselves to memorize the content easier.
Analyzing: Comparing and contrasting our opinions on the blog with the opinions of others in the class. We can disagree with them and let them know by commenting on their journal.
Evaluating: Bellringer tests/ unit tests on movements or body parts. Giving constructive criticism and positive feedback on other students’ blogs.
Creating: Creating twitter and wordpress accounts to implement social media. Making a video to better understand processes such as the Neuromuscular Junction.
This class operates on many levels of the ‘Blooms Digital Taxonomy’ chart.
Remembering: We focus a lot on memorizing and identifying bones and muscles.
Understanding: Not only do we memorize, but we must be able to understand where a muscle/bone is and know what it is used for and what types of movement it is active in. We comment on classmates blogging and articles.
Applying: We must learn to operate differents technology sites to our advantage for sharing information with peirs and the world.
Analysing: We must organize our thoughts when blogging, tweeting, commenting, creating digital presentations etc.
Evaluating: Construtively critiquing work of our classmates. We are tested on skills of memoraizing and understanding material given to us. Collaboratiing with classmates and with different medias. Networking social networks, linking thoughts. Posting on blogs, twitter etc.
Creating: Designing blogs, constructing structures of joints. Broadcasting our veiws through different medias. Publishing articles.
Creating- blogging, designing/invented/planning out our class project
Evaluating- tests on the things we have learnt, blog commenting, bell ringers to check where we are at
Analysing- designing and presenting our group projects, comparing bones and muscle placements/ where they are and how they work
Applying- sharing/uploading our blogs, given a muscle each to research, reseraching on that then sharing it with the whole class, working with sticky notes to stick on classmates to help memorize where the muscles are
Understanding- blog journaling, twittering, commenting, subscribing, explaining
Remembering- googling, sticking note trick, naming muscles when putting stick notes on your partner, social networking, bellringers, activities in class, finding, locating, describing, identifying
I believe the top 3 skills on blooms taxonomy chart that we cover on at least a daily bacis are….
Remembering: when we learn the different bone and muscle structures we are using the remembering skill. mrs leibel gives us various activities that help us remember the muscles and how to differentiate them. such as the text book work and the quizes.
Creating: we use this skill when making prezis for the nero muscular junction and when creating and upkeeping our blogs. and im sure we will use this skill many more times throughout this class
Evaluating: when we comment on eachothers blogs and tweet to eachother we are taking in the information of what we are reading and we ‘evaluate’ it and make appropriate responces toward our classmates in order to gain new information for ourselfs and to give to others.
